Selenium is a trace element essential for the normal functioning of the human body, present in small amounts in tissues and performing important biological functions. It belongs to the micronutrients that must be supplied through the diet, since the body cannot produce them on its own in amounts sufficient to meet its needs.

In the body, selenium is a component of many enzymes and proteins of metabolic importance, including so-called selenoproteins.
